In a significant development for India’s biotechnology sector, Praj Industries has inaugurated the country’s first “Demonstration Facility for Biopolymers” near Pune, showcasing indigenously developed integrated Polylactic Acid (PLA) technology. The facility, inaugurated by Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, marks a major step in scaling up bio-based plastics in India.
Praj Industries, a global leader in industrial biotechnology, has expanded its focus beyond biofuels into renewable chemicals and materials through its Bio-Prism initiative. The new facility, located in Jejuri near Pune, spans three acres and is equipped for the production of 100 tons per annum (TPA) of lactic acid, 60 TPA of lactide, and 55 TPA of PLA. It features cutting-edge sections for fermentation, chemical synthesis, separation, and purification, designed to promote a circular economy with eco-friendly bioplastics.
Bioplastics like PLA offer a biodegradable, human- and environment-safe alternative to traditional plastics. Proven for use in sectors such as food packaging, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and personal care, PLA provides a sustainable solution to the global plastic pollution crisis.
During the inauguration, Minister Jitendra Singh praised the facility as a pioneering effort in India’s journey toward eco-friendly plastics, aligning with the country’s goals of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India.” He noted that this innovation positions India as a leader in the transition from fossil-based plastics to renewable alternatives.
Pramod Chaudhari, Founder Chairman of Praj Industries, highlighted the company’s strategic shift into bioplastics in 2020, aiming to make India a global bio-manufacturing hub. He emphasized that this facility represents a crucial step in addressing the plastic crisis while fostering a sustainable and innovative future for the country.
